The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) is spearheading a massive infrastructural and technological overhaul to establish a globally competitive, digitally driven port system. Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), NPA Managing Director Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho announced a major focus on smart digitalization and sustainability to attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and optimize cargo processing workflows across Nigeria’s coastal gateways.
Central to this modernization strategy is the launch of the Port Community System (PCS) by the first quarter of 2026. This digital platform will fully transition operations into paperless transactions, integrating all stakeholders to minimize waste and reduce cargo dwell times. Automation is also being extended to rail, barge, and trucking applications, built upon existing traffic control systems like the electronic barrier systems deployed across Lagos complexes.
From a green development perspective, the NPA is embedding environmental sustainability into its core logistics framework to reduce reliance on road transport. Key infrastructure initiatives include developing stronger intermodal connectivity and pioneering shore-to-ship emission reduction systems, with the multi-billion dollar Lekki Deep Sea Port leading the implementation.
