ACWA Power, a leader in water desalination and energy transition, has formally partnered with the Government of Senegal on the Grande-Cote seawater desalination project. This landmark infrastructure initiative, secured through a public-private partnership contract, represents the largest desalination project ever undertaken in West Africa with an approximate total investment of $800 million. The project is set to significantly enhance water security for Dakar and its surrounding communities.
A pivotal and distinguishing feature of the project is its commitment to sustainability, as it will be powered entirely by green electricity sourced from Senegal’s national grid. This makes it one of the few large-scale desalination plants globally to operate exclusively on renewable energy, which aligns with Senegal’s broader climate goals. The project will be constructed in two phases, each providing 200,000 m³/day of desalinated water.
Financial close for the project is anticipated by 2026, with full commercial operations slated to begin by 2031. The signing of the agreements, attended by high-level officials from both Senegal and Saudi Arabia, reflects Senegal’s leadership in using public-private partnerships to deliver essential services and reinforces ACWA Power’s role as a key partner in Africa’s sustainable infrastructure development.
