As Nigeria’s cities rapidly expand and digital consumption accelerates, Airtel Nigeria is strategically ramping up its network innovation and distributed infrastructure investments. According to the company’s CEO, Dinesh Balsingh, the urban landscape is evolving with high-rise buildings and expanding city boundaries, necessitating a new approach to network coverage that moves beyond traditional, tower-based solutions.
To address the growing complexity of Nigeria’s megacities, Airtel is deploying innovative solutions like small cells, underground fiber, and lamppost-mounted micro-antennas in high-density zones. The company is also using AI-powered tools and customer experience APIs to analyze and fix user-specific issues in real-time, aiming to gain a competitive advantage in service personalization.
Airtel is also heavily focused on fiber deployment, having already relocated over 3,000 kilometers of fiber in the last two years to minimize service disruptions from road construction and vandalism. While prioritizing the urban market, the company is not neglecting rural areas, and is exploring partnerships with satellite providers like Starlink and OneWeb to enable wider 4G data access in underserved locations. The overall goal is to ensure Nigeria’s infrastructure keeps pace with its digital future.
