Minister at UN: Abuja positioned as hub for smart city innovation

Minister of State for the FCT, Mariya Mahmoud, has called for deepened U.S.-Nigeria collaboration in smart city development and ICT. Speaking at the 8th US-Africa Business Week in New York, she positioned Abuja as a strategic investment hub, noting that Africa’s smart city market is set to hit $1.5 billion in 2025. Projects like Centenary City serve as primary evidence of Nigeria’s ambition to lead in sustainable urban innovation.

The Minister highlighted Abuja’s “Land Swap” housing model and its vibrant, youthful demographic – with 70% of the population under 35 – as prime drivers for economic growth. She encouraged partnerships to deploy smart grids and establish software firms, leveraging Nigeria’s resilience alongside American innovation to define Africa’s urban future.
